Cloud Migration

Agile and cost-efficient migration

Due to digitalization, the business world is in a constant state of flux. For many companies, a cloud migration within their existing IT infrastructure is the logical step to take. In addition to quick wins that can be realized due to fewer downtimes, for example, sustainable effects such as long-term cost savings can also be gained by migrating to the cloud.

However, a holistic consideration of the application landscape with inclusion of the software development side is often the more sustainable approach, even if it is more difficult to conceptualize. But additional costs in the planning phase are often offset by a more lasting impact on the company’s IT.

When choosing the right migration strategy, we base our decisions on the “6 Rs” theory of cloud migration. It is important to know what not (yet) to touch (“retain”), what can be solved differently (“repurchase”) and what it is better to let go of (“retire”).

Infrastructure focus

The focus is on changing the foundation of an application to primarily IaaS and PaaS services in a cloud. We support the corresponding process models of our partners AWS and Microsoft and help you develop a landing zone that links your IT environment with the respective clouds. We use this process in the areas of “rehosting” and, in some cases, “replatforming”.

Application focus

In most cases, the more sustainable lever for cloud migration is to look at the application landscape and also make a conscious decision to make the applications themselves “cloud-ready” or even “cloud-native”. This is where our App2Cloud offering comes in, which begins with a full assessment of your application landscape in relation to the “6 Rs”.

Lift and shift scenarios (infrastructure focus)

We support the corresponding process models of our partners AWS and Microsoft and help with the development of (public) clouds by establishing a landing zone that links your IT environment with the respective clouds in a secure and regulatory acceptable way.

For migration operations in the direction of Microsoft Azure, among other things, we make use of the “Azure Migrate” approach from our partner Microsoft. Discover more on our Azure Cloud site.

For migration operations in the direction of Amazon Web Services, among other things, we use the “Migration Acceleration Program (MAP)” of our partner Microsoft.

App2Cloud (application focus)

In most cases, the more sustainable lever for cloud migration is to look at the application landscape and also make a conscious decision to make the applications themselves “cloud-ready” or even “cloud-native”. This is where our App2Cloud offering comes in, which begins with a full assessment of your application landscape in relation to the “6-7 Rs”.

Data Center as a Service

We can also continue to run your legacy systems in our data center. At this point we have additional experience with linking our own data centers and mobile users.

Typical mistakes during migration

Not scrutinizing your own objectives

The most important initial question should be: What challenges and problems will migration to the cloud resolve for my company? Once you have defined your own objectives, the next step is to prepare for and plan the migration.

Migration strategy not defined

The most important strategies are lift and shift, replatform and refactor/rearchitect. With lift and shift, the application is simply moved to the cloud – no changes are made to the architecture. With replatforming, some optimizations are made so that you benefit from the cloud, but the core of the application remains untouched. Finally, with refactoring/rearchitecting, the current solution is fundamentally revised or a new solution is developed so that you gain as many benefits as possible from using the cloud.

But we can do all of that ourselves

In most cases, companies still have little or no expertise with regard to the cloud. Suitable external partners should therefore be considered for the development of the cloud strategy, the migration and support of the AWS infrastructure.

The cloud automatically reduces our costs

Of course, it is possible to cut costs by using a cloud infrastructure, but not in all cases. A specific analysis is the best way to get an overview of the actual costs.

Forgot about cloud security

Many users are unaware that cloud providers share the overall responsibility according to the principle of the “Shared Responsibility Model”. Data in the cloud is not automatically secure. Optimum security requires various tools, which must also be used correctly.

It is sufficient to copy applications onto cloud servers

To gain long-term benefits from the cloud, you have to link applications and the cloud in the best possible way in order to fully exploit the possibilities of distributed cloud platforms.
