A decisive disadvantage of OnPremise: The capacities are fixed and cannot be easily expanded or scaled back. This was also a problem for a customer who had previously run his online store on his own servers. In order to be able to scale during temporary peaks due to special promotions or flash sales, he has to maintain a high server capacity throughout the year. Successful growth now makes a hardware refresh necessary – and the customer was looking for ways to minimize his costs in this area. Skaylink supported him in the assess phase. 

Understanding internal structures & taking employees along

Previously, the customer had not yet addressed the topic of the cloud due to the on-premise operation of its own data center. Therefore, Skaylink’s experts first had to check to what extent the company’s structures were ready for the cloud. To do this, they surveyed the workloads in the infrastructure and assessed their criticality. The team evaluated a cloud report from the findings, showing how the workloads could be built in the AWS cloud. It compared the costs of the cloud concept to those of the current on-premise solution and mapped out a path for a smooth migration without shop-side downtime. In parallel, a Cloud Advisory Workshop kicked off a series of workshops to pick up employees on the topic of the cloud. At the end of the process, the customer decided to take the next step towards the cloud with a Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA).

This means that the next phase starts with the customer having a clear idea of the costs, the final infrastructure and how to get there. This gives him all the information he needs to make the best decision for his company. In the customer’s case, the cloud architecture should be designed for high elasticity. In conjunction with auto-scaling groups and Elastic Loadbalancers, this helps to reduce running costs. The switch from on-premise to cloud infrastructure can save the company around 25 percent in costs. The workshops also created a general basis for the topic of cloud in order to successfully initiate the next transformation steps. The migration project thus had a solid motivating basis among the employees. The preparatory work clearly shows that the step into the cloud is the right one for the customer. The next step is to move from planning to implementation in order to really take advantage of cloud benefits such as elasticity and scalability.
